Affordable Housing in Paradise
A long time coming, this 84 unit development replaces a previous one that was demolished after hurricane Marylin in 1995. This is Innova’s first foray into the Caribbean, which involved a steep learning curve on hurricane resistant construction, tropical climate building practices and the logistical challenges of large scale construction in the islands. The building structures are entirely concrete and include hurricane rated windows, stainless fasteners everywhere and air conditioning, but no heating systems, since the temperature rarely drops far enough for it to be necessary. This also represents Innova’s first project to be entirely “off the grid” in terms of power generation. All of the project’s power will be supplied by a microgrid consisting of a solar PV array, battery storage, turbines and a back up generator. The project has a high profile on St. Thomas and the U.S. Virgin Islands as a whole, as safe, quality affordable housing is in short supply on the islands. Innova forged a relationship with a highly experienced local architect to provide enhanced oversight on the project (in addition to periodic visits from Innova’s own PM), as it was the first Caribbean project for the client as well.
